Ficus pumila (Creeping Fig) Details

Ficus pumila, commonly known as Creeping Fig and Climbing Fig, is an impressive climbing plant. It carries small, heart shaped leaves which are light green when young and become darker green with age. It clings to walls by aerial roots along the stems which enable it to spread quickly across a surface. It will easily climb to cover an area 4 m by 4 m within two years. As the plant matures it develops thick, stocky branches which can be pruned off to encourage new growth. This Climbing Fig grows well in full sun through to heavy shade conditions but does require a well-drained soil. Frosts and cold environments may cause defoliation, but it will generally regrow again when conditions warm. Ficus pumila is also tolerant of coastal winds, periods of dry, and urban environments. Ficus pumila is a great plant for covering a wall or trellis and it is commonly used in formal gardens across NZ. Space Creeping Fig about 1 m apart when planting to cover a wall.
