Dicksonia squarrosa, commonly known as NZ Wheki or Rough Tree Fern, is a NZ native tree fern that features a slender trunk and lovely fronds. The fronds emerge from a central crown and are typically 1.5 to 3 m long. They are mid-green and form a small umbrella above the trunk. It is relatively quick growing, typically reaching 6 m tall and 4 m wide, and often sends out roots which result in new plants and a colony forming. This tree fern grows best when planted in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained, sheltered site that does not dry out. It is hardy to moderate frost and will tolerate most soil types, barring the extremes of wet and dry. Dicksonia squarrosa is a great tree fern for adding to revegetation projects, native plantings, mixed plantings, or growing alongside a water feature such as a pond or stream.
