Libertia ‘Volcano’ is a popular plant due to its colourful foliage and pretty flowers. The sword-like foliage on this NZ Iris is variegated with stripes of gold, green, orange, and red. Complementing the foliage are white, star like flowers which are borne above the foliage in spring. It typically grows to 50 cm tall and the same wide, performing best when planted in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of coastal conditions, cool climates, moderate frost, and a wide range of soil conditions, barring extreme wet or dry. In NZ gardens Libertia ‘Volcano’ is commonly added to a mixed planting, planted around the base of a large tree, mass planted either on a bank or as a groundcover plant, or grown anywhere structure and texture are desired.
