Olea ‘Ascolano’ is a variety of Olive tree grown in NZ for its high quality fruit. The large, green fruit have a delicate, mild taste and can be squeezed to make a rich, tasty oil. They originate from white-cream flowers in summer. NB: For best fruiting we recommend another Olive tree variety be planted nearby to aid pollination. The foliage comprises grey-green leaves held on rigid branches. This evergreen typically grows to 3 m tall and the same wide, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of extended dry periods, moderate frost, and cool climates, and some wind, though will benefit from protection while establishing. Olea ‘Ascolano’ is one of the more popular varieties and is often grown for fruit production. It also makes for an impressive specimen tree and is useful for screening, using as a windbreak, or being trimming either into a hedge or for topiary. For an ‘Ascolano’ hedge, space the olive trees 75cm to 1 m apart.
