“Winter Cole” is a variety of pear grown for its impressively flavoured and textured fruit which ripen in late autumn. The rounded fruit have a russeted skin and a juicy, richly flavoured flesh. These are held amidst the fresh, green foliage which develops yellow tones in autumn before falling. This variety requires another variety planted nearby such as “Winter Nelis” to aid pollination for good yields. It typically grows to 4 m tall and 3.5 m wide but can be trimmed as necessary. Best yields are achieved when it is planted in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered site, with good soil moisture during dry periods. It is tolerant of cool climates and frost, though a late frost in spring may reduce the yield. “Winter Cole” is commonly grown for fruit production, included into a mixed planting, or grown as a specimen. NB: This variety is not recommended for tropical or subtropical climates.
