Ajuga reptans ‘Chocolate Chip’, commonly known as Bugleweed, Common Bugle, or Carpet Bugle, is a variety of Ajuga grown for its dwarf habit and chocolate coloured foliage. It forms a spreading mound of lush leaves which become adorned with showy spikes of blue-purple flowers in spring. It typically grows to about 10 cm tall and 20 cm wide but will spread to cover a larger area in time. This evergreen Bugleweed requires a well-drained site with good summer moisture to perform. It is frost hardy, tolerant of coastal environments, and can be grown in full sun or partial shade. Ajuga reptans ‘Chocolate Chip’ is commonly used as a groundcover, grown in a container, or used to transform a shady area. A mass planting produces a very rewarding display with this popular Carpet Bugle.
