“Marshmallow” is a variety of Bergenia selected for its lush foliage and pretty flowers. The leaves are large and arranged as a somewhat flat rosette. They tend to be glossy green but as temperatures cool, they develop red-bronze tones. Colourful, pale pink flowers are borne from late winter through spring on short stems which emerge from the centre of the plant. It grows as a tidy clump to about 50 cm tall and the same wide, performing best when planted in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of moderate frost, cool climates, short periods of dry, and a wide range of soil conditions, except extreme wet or dry. In cooler areas the plants may die back during winter to regrow again when conditions warm. This is a very fashionable and hardy plant that is ideal for border planting or mass planting as a groundcover. It is often used in cottage gardens, planted around outdoor living areas, or maintained in a container.
