“King of the Blacks” is a variety of Carnation that features very dark purple flowers that have the appearance of black velvet. It is often used by florists to make a dramatic impact in cut flower arrangements. Plants form a low mound of grassy, grey-green leaves and bear masses of medium sized, mildly scented blooms in spring. The flowers are great for attracting bees and butterflies. It typically grows to 60 cm tall and 50 cm wide, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained site. This popular plant can be maintained in a container, used to create a stunning display as a border plant, included in mixed plantings, or grown with white flowering plants to create dramatic contrasts. Carnations are often treated as annuals or short-lived perennials and favoured in cottage gardens.
