“Dark Star” is a variety of the commonly known, Society Garlic, and is grown for its showy and fragrant flowers. Clusters of lilac-pink flowers are borne from summer until autumn on stems that rise above the foliage. These are held above the narrow, dark green, strap like foliage which releases a garlic odour when bruised. This herbaceous perennial grows as a clump to about 40 cm tall and 50 cm wide, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of mild frost and may die back during winter to regrow again when conditions warm. Society Garlic is commonly used in cottage gardens, included in borders and herb gardens, maintained in a container, or mass planted for an impressive show.
