Commonly known as The Chatham Islands Nikau, this is one of the hardier Nikau Palm varieties. From a central trunk it produces large and broad fronds with a gentle arch. They are dark green, handsome, and enable it to grow to about 10 m tall with a spread of 6 m. Cascades of small flowers in summer result in fruits that are green at first but ripen to a bright red in autumn. These fruits are great for attracting birds. This Palm grows best when planted on a well-drained, sheltered site that is frost free. It will take a light frost once established. It also requires good levels of soil moisture during dry periods. This spectacular Palm is highly sought after and very popular. It is a must for any sub-tropical garden or where an attractive specimen is required.
