Callistemon ‘John Mashlan’ is a vigorous shrub renowned for its attractive foliage and bottlebrush like flowers. New leaves emerge silver-pink and turn mid-green as they age. The foliage serves as a pleasant backdrop to the masses of pink, bottlebrush-like flowers that appear in clusters from spring through autumn. The flowers are great for attracting birds and bees. It typically grows to 4 m tall and 3 m wide but is often pruned back to just behind the flowers after the spring flush. This bottlebrush grows best when planted in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. It will, however, tolerate a wide variety of climatic conditions including frost and coastal environments as well as most soil types, barring extreme wet or dry, making it an easy plant to grow. Callistemon ‘John Mashlan’ is commonly used for screening and shelter, grown as a specimen, added to a mixed planting, or clipped into a hedge. Space plants 60 cm apart for hedging.
