Callistemon citrinus ‘Red Alert’ is an evergreen shrub renowned for its attractive foliage and hardiness. New growth is bright red and literally transforms the plant for months on end. The foliage ages to a mid-green with an olive overtone. It typically grows to 2 m tall and the same wide with a somewhat rounded shape. It responds well to trimming which helps keep the plant dense. This variety of Callistemon grows best when planted in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. It tolerates a wide variety of climatic conditions, including frost and coastal environments, as well as most soil types, barring extreme wet or dry. This makes it an easy to grow plant which is also low maintenance. Callistemon ‘Red Alert’ is commonly used for screening and shelter, included in a mixed planting, or clipped into a hedge. For hedging space plants 50-60 cm apart.
