Commonly known as The Kakabeak, this NZ native shrub produces masses of beak like flowers from winter through spring. The showy, red flowers literally transform the plant during this time and result in small fruits that are great for attracting birds. The mid-green foliage is soft in appearance and provides a lovely backdrop to the flowers. It typically grows to 2 m tall and 1.5 m wide, performing best when planted in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained, sheltered site. It is tolerant of moderate frost and dry periods. This Kakabeak is commonly included in a mixed planting, used as a backdrop for smaller plants, grown to mask a bland wall, planted around outdoor living areas, maintained in a container, or planted en masse for an impressive display. It is a low maintenance and forgiving plant that is easy to grow.
