Escallonia ‘Red Knight’ is a variety of Escallonia renowned for its attractive foliage and quaint flowers. Lush and glossy, green leaves give way to showy clusters of red-pink flowers through spring and summer. It typically grows to 2 m tall and the same wide and can be trimmed as necessary. Best performance with this evergreen shrub is achieved when it is grown in full sun on a well-drained site though it is hardy to moderate frost, some wind, and coastal conditions. Escallonia ‘Red Knight’ is commonly included in a mixed planting, used as a backdrop for smaller plants, included in cottage gardens, planted around outdoor living areas, or trimmed into a hedge with plants spaced 50 cm apart. This is a colourful plant well suited to NZ gardens.
