Escallonia ‘Red Elf’ is renowned for its masses of quaint flowers. Lush and glossy, green leaves give way to showy clusters of red flowers through spring and summer. It typically grows to 2 m tall and 1.5 m wide and can be trimmed as necessary. Best performance with this evergreen shrub is achieved when it is grown in full sun on a well-drained site though it is hardy to moderate frost, some wind, and coastal conditions. Escallonia ‘Red Elf’ is commonly included in a mixed planting in NZ gardens, used as a backdrop for smaller plants, included in cottage gardens, planted around outdoor living areas, or trimmed into a hedge with plants spaced 50 cm apart.
