Ilex crenata ‘Helleri’ is a variety of the commonly known, Japanese Holly, and grows as a dense, rounded shrub. It carries small, glossy leaves held densely on short stems which emerge a light green and quickly age to become dark green. Black berries are borne amidst the foliage in autumn and add extra interest to this plant. This evergreen Japanese Holly typically grows to 75 cm tall and 1.5 m wide, performing best when positioned in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of dry conditions, cool climates, frost, and coastal conditions. Ilex crenata ‘Helleri’ is commonly included in borders or mixed plantings, trimmed into a low hedge, used for topiary, or maintained in a container.
