“Wiri Joan” is a variety of Manuka that features masses of double, rich red flowers from spring through autumn. The foliage comprises small, green leaves which give off a pleasant fragrance on warm days or when crushed. It typically grows to 2 m tall and 1.5 m wide, performing best when planted in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. This hardy plant will tolerate dry periods, coastal conditions, frost, cool climates, and a wide range of soil conditions barring extreme wet or dry. “Wiri Joan” is commonly included in a mixed planting, trimmed into a hedge, used as a backdrop for smaller plants, planted against a light coloured wall, or gown as a small specimen.
