“Goldflame” is a variety of Spiraea grown for its dense and attractive foliage that changes with the seasons. New growth emerges bronze-tinged, ages to become soft yellow-green, then changes to a brilliant copper-orange as autumn progresses. Clusters of dark pink-red flowers are borne through summer and add yet more interest to this colourful plant. This deciduous shrub grows with a rounded form to about 1 m tall and the same wide, and can be trimmed as necessary. It grows best when planted in full sun on a well-drained site, and is tolerant of coastal conditions, frost, and cool climates. “Goldflame” is commonly included in borders and mixed plantings, maintained in a container, trimmed into a hedge, planted to brighten a dull corner, or mass planted for a stunning display. The colourful leaves provide a lovely contrast to other plant colours in mixed plantings. For hedging space plants 45 cm apart.
