“Red Dragon” is an impressive, small, Japanese maple featuring a rich display of interestingly coloured, gently weeping foliage. The finely cut leaves emerge cherry red and mature to burgundy red through summer. As autumn progresses the leaves turn crimson red before falling. It typically grows to 2.5 m tall and the same wide, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained, moderately sheltered site. It is tolerant of frost and cool climates and will grow on a range of soil types but will struggle at the extremes of wet and dry. “Red Dragon” is ideal for mixed plantings, planting against a bland wall, maintaining in a container, or for including anywhere the spectacular colour can be enjoyed.
