“Red Sunset” is a medium-sized, deciduous tree that features fantastic autumn colours. The lush foliage emerges mid-green in spring, quickly ages to dark green, then turns bright orange and red in autumn before falling. In spring, clusters of showy, red flowers are produced which result in red, winged seeds called samaras. It has an upright growth habit and typically reaches 15 m tall and 7 m wide, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained site. It will grow on a range of soil types but will struggle at the extremes of wet and dry. It is also tolerant of frost, cool climates, some wind, and coastal environments but will produce a better tree if it is protected while establishing. “Red Sunset” makes for a magnificent specimen and is ideal for adding to a mixed planting in a large garden, using in avenue plantings, planting for shade, or growing anywhere its vibrant autumn colours can be appreciated.
