“Imperialis” is a variety of Alder grown for its attractive form and foliage. It is a reasonably fast growing, deciduous tree that will reach 15 m and 8 m wide. It carries finely divided leaves which emerge light green, darken to mid-green, then develop purple colourings in autumn before falling. Small, nutlike cones become more apparent when the leaves drop and remain on the tree through winter. This tree grows best on a well-drained site in full sun though it is tolerant of cold environments, coastal conditions, and heavy soils. “Imperialis” makes for an attractive landscape specimen year round and is also commonly used for screening and shelter, included in avenue plantings, or planting alongside waterways.
