“Avondale” is a small tree grown for its lovely flowers and distinctive foliage. The dark green leaves on this deciduous tree have a prominent heart shape and as winter approaches, they develop a yellow tone before falling. Before the foliage emerges in spring, the tree is adorned with clusters of dark pink blossoms. The display is outstanding. It grows as either a multi-stemmed or single-trunked tree with a broad and rounded canopy to about 4.5 m tall and 3.5 m wide. It performs best when planted in full sun on a well-drained, reasonably sheltered site, and is tolerant of frost and cool climates. “Avondale” is commonly used as a specimen tree, planted to line an avenue or border an entrance, added to cottage gardens, or included in a mixed planting if space affords.
