Commonly known as Hawthorn, “Paul's Scarlet” is an impressive selection owing to its prolific flowering. This thorny tree produces fully double, red flowers en masse through spring. These result in red berries in summer which last for several months and are great for attracting birds. The foliage is a pleasant, bright green and develops colourful, yellow and red tones in autumn before falling. It grows somewhat slowly to eventually reach 6 m tall and the same wide though can be contained with trimming as necessary. This tree performs best when planted on a well-drained, semi-sheltered site in full sun, noting that it is tolerant of frost and cool climates. “Paul's Scarlet” makes for a fantastic specimen and suits avenue planting, or being included in a mixed planting. This lovely tree is perfect for providing year-round interest.
