“Fastigiata” is a variety of Ginkgo grown for its columnar growth habit and colourful foliage. This deciduous tree has distinctive, fan-shaped, rich green leaves. The leaves turn bright yellow in autumn before falling and form a golden carpet around the tree as they drop. Ginkgos grow as separate male and female trees and nurseries typically only sell male trees because female trees produce seeds encased in fleshy covering which tend to be messy and emit a foul odour. This variety typically grows to 12 m tall and 3 m wide, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained site. It will tolerate frost, cool climates, heavy soils, moderate wind, and urban pollution. “Fastigiata” is commonly used in street and avenue plantings, planted for shelter and screening, used as a backdrop for other plants, or grown as a specimen. It is also great for planting to soften a large, bland wall or for planting around water features such as ponds and streams.
