“Cleopatra” is an outstanding variety of Magnolia due to its spectacular flowering. It produces masses of large and showy, dark purple flowers through late winter and early spring. The fragrant flowers are borne on the naked stems before the foliage emerges. The foliage emerges dark green in spring, remains this colour until autumn, then develops yellow tones before falling. It typically grows to 4 m tall and 3 m wide and responds well to trimming. This variety grows best when planted in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered site, and is tolerant of frost and cool climates. “Cleopatra” makes for a lovely specimen and is commonly added into a mixed planting, or planted as a backdrop for smaller plants. The beauty of this tree will please no matter where it is planted.
