Commonly known as Mahoe, this is a mid-sized, NZ native tree. It features lush foliage which is bright green and tends to become darker with age. Tiny flowers are produced in abundance through spring and are followed by purple-black berries. This evergreen typically grows to 8 m tall and 4 m wide, performing best when planted in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of frost, cool climates, periods of dry, moderate wind, coastal conditions, and most soil conditions, barring extreme wet or dry. Mahoe is commonly used in coastal gardens, included in a mixed planting, used as a backdrop for smaller plants, trimmed into a hedge, or used in revegetation programs.
