Metrosideros ‘Moonlight’ is a lovely Pohutukawa that grows as a tree and is renowned for its eye-catching foliage and flowers. It carries foliage that is variegated cream and green. This is complemented with masses of small, red flowers through summer that are great for attracting birds. It typically grows to 12 m tall and 5 m wide, though can be trimmed to smaller sizes. Best results with this variety are achieved when it is planted in full sun on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of poor soils, dry periods, frost, and coastal conditions but will benefit from being protected while it is establishing. Metrosideros ‘Moonlight’ is an excellent choice for coastal and courtyard gardens, adding to a mixed planting, using as a backdrop for smaller plants, planting around outdoor living areas, or for maintaining in a container. This variety of Pohutukawa can also be clipped into an attractive hedge.
