Pittosporum eugenioides ‘Variegatum’ is a lovely, NZ native tree. It features slender, dark coloured stems which bear dark green leaves with a cream-white margin. The lush foliage is held densely and releases a pleasant lemon scent when crushed. Small and fragrant, pale-yellow flowers provide a lovely accent through summer. It grows reasonably quickly to about 6 m tall and 3 m wide and can be contained with trimming. Best results with this evergreen are achieved when it is planted in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of wind, coastal conditions, periods of dry, moderate frost, and most soil types, except extreme wet or dry. Pittosporum eugenioides ‘Variegatum’ is ideal for shelter, screening, and hedging. It is also commonly used as a backdrop for smaller plants or included in native plantings.
