Commonly known as the Red Oak, this deciduous tree features colourful autumn foliage. The foliage emerges light green in spring, ages to dark green, then develops impressive red and orange colours in autumn before falling. Small, yellow-green flowers in spring produce brown acorns in autumn. This majestic beauty typically grows to 12 m tall and 8 m wide with a rounded and somewhat open crown. It performs best when planted on a well-drained site in full sun, though it is tolerant of frost, cool climates, heavy soils, and some wind. The Red Oak is widely planted in avenues or grown as a specimen in large gardens and parks with the added advantage of fantastic summer shade.
