Quercus suber is commonly known as the Cork Oak due to its rough and spongy bark which is often used to produce corks. It grows as a large, evergreen tree, typically reaching 20 m tall and 15 m wide with a rounded and somewhat open crown. The foliage is mid-green and very aesthetic. It performs best when planted on a well-drained site in full sun, and is tolerant of moderate frost, cool climates, heavy soils, urban pollution, and some wind. The Cork Oak is commonly grown as a unique specimen in large gardens and parks with the added advantage of fantastic summer shade.
