“Tortuosa” is a variety of Willow grown for its interesting stems and foliage. It is often known as the Corkscrew Willow due to the contorted nature of the stems. The fine and lush foliage emerges mid-green in spring, ages to a darker green, then develops yellow tones in autumn before falling. The foliage is held on pendulous stems as it grows to 15 m tall and 8 m wide. It can be contained to sizes less than this with trimming and performs best when grown in full sun or partial shade on soils that remain consistently moist. It will tolerate frost, cool climates, heavy and wet soils, and some wind. “Tortuosa” is commonly planted around water features, grown as a specimen, or added to a mixed planting in a large garden. It is also well suited to riparian planting and assisting with reducing erosion.
