Commonly known as the California Pepper Tree, this is an evergreen tree grown for its attractive form and foliage. The foliage is bright green and comprised of mulitple leaflets off an arching stem. This gives the foliage a weeping appearance. It has rough, twisted, dark grey trunk which is interesting in its own right. Through summer it produces fragrant, white-yellow flowers that hang in a pendulous fashion which result in red berries in autumn that last into winter. It typically grows to 10 m tall and 8 m wide, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained site. It will tolerate dry periods, coastal environments, urban pollution, but not harsh frost. This tree is commonly grown for shade, as a specimen, in parks, avenues, or grown in large garden.
