Zelkova serrata is a deciduous tree grown for its brilliant autumn colours. The mid-sized leaves emerge bright green in spring, age to become dark green, then develop lovely shades of red and yellow in autumn before falling. Small flowers are produced in spring which result in small, bean like fruit in late summer. It grows with an upright habit and produces a broad and open crown as it reaches 15 m tall and the same wide. Best results with this tree are achieved when it is grown in full sun on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of frost, cool climates, dry periods, and moderate wind. This showy tree is commonly grown as a specimen in large gardens and parks, or used to line an avenue.
