Metrosideros carminea
Metrosideros carminea, commonly known as the Crimson Rata Vine, is a sturdy climber that can grow up to 15 m tall if left untrimmed. If it has nothing to climb it will grow as a small shrub to about 2 m tall and 1 m wide. The lants carry dark green, leathery leaves and produce masses of bright red flowers from late winter through spring. Metrosideros carminea is commonly used as a standalone shrub or grown as a climber on a fence or the like.

It will easily climb to cover an area 4 m by 4 m within two years. Ficus pumila is a great plant for covering a wall or trellis and it is commonly used in formal gardens across NZ.
