Alnus jorullensis, commonly known as the Evergreen Alder or Mexican Alder, is a fast-growing tree that produces a broad crown of open and drooping branches. The branches host dark green leaves with serrated edges and while it will generally be evergreen, in cooler climates it may become deciduous or semi-deciduous as it reaches 10 m tall and 6 m wide. Alnus jorullensis is commonly grown as a specimen, used for screening and shelter, trimmed into a hedge, or planted in the wetter areas of a garden or alongside water features such as ponds and streams.

Cunonia capensis, commonly known as the Butter Knife Bush, is a fast-growing tree that features lovely foliage and interesting flowers. It has large and glossy, dark green leaves with new foliage emerging a bronze-red colour. The foliage is complemented with sprays of fragrant, cream-coloured flowers in summer.
