The serrated leaves have a green topside and a purple underside, and are held densely on slender branches. The tree becomes smothered in white, blossom like flowers through summer as it grows to 5 m tall and 2.5 m wide. Hoheria Purple Wave is commonly included in a mixed planting, planted as a quick growing shelter tree, used for screening, or grown as a specimen. Cryptomeria japonica Egmont, commonly known as Japanese Cedar, is an evergreen tree that makes an exceptional and hardy shelterbelt. It features dense, dark green foliage held on short stems and grows with an upright habit. Left untrimmed it will reach 30 m tall and 8 m wide but it is often trimmed to much smaller sizes. Cryptomeria japonica Egmont is commonly planted for shelter and screening where a hardy evergreen is required. Plants should be spaced 1.5 m apart in these situations.
