Carex buchananii, commonly known as Leatherleaf Sedge, Buchanans Sedge, or Brown Carex, features fine, brown leaves that are held with a graceful arch. It typically grows to 60 cm tall and the same wide. Leatherleaf Sedge is commonly included in mixed plantings and borders, mass planted either as a groundcover or on a bank, used in rock gardens, or simply grown in a container. Landscape gardeners will often use Carex buchananii to provide outstanding colour contrasts.

Hebe Champion is an exquisite variety that grows as a compact shrub and carries rounded, glossy, mid-green foliage. The leaves are adorned during summer and autumn with masses of blue-lilac spikes that gradually fade to white with age as it grows to 75 cm tall and the same wide.
