Betula nigra, commonly known as River Birch, is a large, deciduous tree that will grow almost anywhere. It grows rapidly with a pyramidal habit when young and tends to broaden out with age, eventually reaching 15 m tall and 8 m wide. The foliage emerges mid-green in spring and remains this way before developing yellow tones in autumn and falling. Betula nigra is well suited to growing as a specimen in parks and large gardens, for planting beside water features such as ponds and streams, growing as a screen or for shelter on heavier soils, or using in riparian plantings.

Quercus robur, commonly known as the English Oak tree or Pedunculate Oak, is a large and stately, deciduous tree. This Oak tree typically grows to 25 m tall and 15 m wide with a broad and spreading crown. The foliage emerges light green in spring, ages to dark green, then lightens only slightly before falling in autumn. Small, yellow-green flowers in spring produce brown acorns in autumn.
