Pittosporum tenuifolium, commonly known as Kohuhu Pittosporum or Black Matipo, is an evergreen, NZ native tree growing up to 10 m tall and 3 m wide. The leaves tend to vary in size and shape as a result of regional differences but in the main are green-blue. Pittosporum tenuifolium is commonly included in coastal gardens, trimmed into a hedge, used as a backdrop for smaller plants, planted for shelter or screening, or included in native revegetation exercises.

Metrosideros robusta, commonly known as Northern Rata, is a NZ native tree grown for its flowers and foliage. New growth is often pink and finely covered with rust-coloured hairs but quickly ages to become dark green. The foliage is adorned with masses of bright red flowers in summer as it grows to 15 m tall 6 m wide. Metrosideros robusta will tolerate shade, moderate frost, cool climates, and a range of soil conditions, barring extreme wet. Northern Rata is commonly included in a mixed planting or in revegetation programs.
