Metrosideros robusta, commonly known as Northern Rata, is a NZ native tree grown for its flowers and foliage. New growth is often pink and finely covered with rust-coloured hairs but quickly ages to become dark green. The foliage is adorned with masses of bright red flowers in summer as it grows to 15 m tall 6 m wide. Metrosideros robusta will tolerate shade, moderate frost, cool climates, and a range of soil conditions, barring extreme wet. Northern Rata is commonly included in a mixed planting or in revegetation programs.
