Toe Toe Questions

1. How long does it take to grow Toe Toe?

Toe Toe (Cortaderia or Austroderia) is a fast-growing New Zealand native grass that can reach heights of up to 2 metres in just a few years. It is a popular ornamental plant for gardens and parks due to its attractive foliage and flowers.

2. How to propagate Toe Toe

Toe Toe can be grown from seed or dividing established plants. If you are growing Toe Toe from seed, sow the seeds in the spring or summer in a well-drained seed mix. Keep the seed mix moist and the seeds will germinate within a few weeks. Once the seedlings have emerged, transplant them into individual pots or into the garden.

If you are dividing an established plant, do so in autumn or spring. Dig up the plant and carefully divide it into two or more sections. Replant the divisions in well-drained soil and water them regularly.

3. Where does Toe Toe grow in NZ?

Toe Toe (Cortaderia) is a native New Zealand grass that can be found throughout the country. It is found naturally in wetlands, swamps, and river margins, but can also be found in coastal areas, forests, and grasslands.

4. How far apart do you plant Toe Toe?

When planting Toe Toe they are generally spaced 1.5 metres apart. This will give the plants enough room to grow and spread out. If you are planting Toe Toe in a row, be sure to space the plants at least 1 metre apart.

When choosing a planting location for Toe Toe, be sure to select a spot that receives full sun or partial shade and is well-drained.

5. What is the difference between Toe Toe and pampas?

Toe Toe (Cortaderia richardii) and pampas grass (Cortaderia selloana) are two similar-looking grasses, but they have some key differences.

6. Is Toi Toi native to New Zealand?

Toe Toe, also sometimes spelled toi toi, is native to New Zealand! It's actually the country's largest native tussock grass. There are five species of Toe Toe found in New Zealand, and they can be found in a variety of habitats, including sand dunes, cliffs, swamps, and wetlands.

7. Is pampas grass native to New Zealand?

No, pampas grass is not native to New Zealand. It is actually an invasive weed that originated in South America, specifically the pampas region of Argentina and Uruguay. It was introduced to New Zealand in the 19th century by early settlers for decorative purposes and windbreaks.

Although it may resemble the native Toe Toe, pampas grass poses a significant threat to New Zealand's biodiversity. It is highly competitive and grows aggressively, displacing native plants and altering habitats. Here's why pampas grass is considered invasive:

Due to its harmful impact, pampas grass was classified as a pest plant in New Zealand in 2001. Its sale and propagation are prohibited, and efforts are underway to control its spread and remove it from natural areas.

8. Where does toe toe grow in NZ?

The five species of Toe Toe in New Zealand have diverse preferences when it comes to their habitat:

• Austroderia Toe Toe: This species loves the wet life, thriving in swamps and wet ground in the North Island south of Tauranga. Think wetlands, stream and lake margins, and even disturbed hillsides.

• Austroderia fulvida: You'll find this one chilling by water too, but it's spread across both the North and South Island. Look for it in wet places, near streams, lakes, and forest margins, even up to the subalpine zone.

• Austroderia richardii: Another water enthusiast, this Toe Toe calls the South Island its home. Similar to fulvida, it enjoys lakes, streams, and forest margins, but you might also spot it on disturbed hillsides.

• Austroderia splendens: This is the king of the sandcastles, ruling over lowland sand dunes, cliffs, and rocky places in Northland, Bay of Plenty, and Waikato.

• Austroderia turbaria: This shy introvert prefers the isolation of the Chatham Islands, specifically sphagnum swamps and peat bogs.
