3. How to grow Loquats
To grow loquats in New Zealand, you will need to choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Loquat trees can grow in a variety of soil types, but they prefer sandy or loamy soil. Once you have chosen a spot for your tree, dig a hole that is twice the width of the root ball of the tree. Add compost to the soil and plant the tree, firming the soil gently around the roots. Water the tree thoroughly after planting. The Plant Company recommends staking trees to prevent wind damage, and also mulching around trees to prevent weeds and preserve moisture.
4. How fast growing is a loquat tree?
Loquat trees are fast-growing trees that can grow up to 1 metre per year in ideal conditions. They can reach heights of up to 10 metres and widths of up to 8 metres at maturity.
Loquats are typically planted in the spring and begin to produce fruit within 3-5 years of planting. The fruit ripens in the late summer and early autumn.
5. When should I buy a Loquat?
The best time to buy a loquat is in the spring, after the last frost. This will give the tree a full season to grow and establish itself before the next winter. If you buy loquats in autumn you may need to consider protecting them from frosts.
