Morus nigra

Black Mulberry, Persian Mulberry, Common Mulberry, Sycamine Tree

Morus nigra, commonly known as the Black Mulberry Tree, produces small white flowers in spring which result in the large, black, juicy berries in summer. The foliage is mid-green and develops yellow tones in autumn before falling. It will grow to about 8 m tall and spread 10 m but can be contained with trimming as necessary. Morus nigra is commonly grown as specimen with the added advantages of fruit and summer shade. It is also commonly included in a mixed planting or simply grown for fruit production.

When is the best time for planting Morus nigra?

The best time to plant Morus nigra (Black Mulberry) is during the dormant season, which spans from autumn to spring. However, the optimal timing within this period is spring, as the warming soil encourages better root establishment. This allows the young tree to settle in well before the heat of summer arrives.

Morus nigra pruning

Pruning Morus nigra (Black Mulberry) is important for maintaining its shape, encouraging healthy growth, improving fruit production, and making harvesting easier. The ideal time to prune black mulberry trees is during the dormant season, which is late autumn or early winter. Avoid heavy pruning after mid-winter as mulberries tend to "bleed" a lot of sap when pruned during active sap flow. Pruning aims to develop a strong framework of branches and maintain a manageable size and shape. It also opens up the canopy, allowing sunlight to penetrate and air to circulate, which helps in fruit ripening and reduces the risk of diseases. While mulberries fruit on the previous year's wood, light pruning can encourage new growth that will bear fruit the following season. Removing excessive growth can also direct the tree's energy into fruit production on the remaining branches. Start by trimming the tree to the maximum height you are happy with. Next, remove branches outside the width you are happy with. Finally, eliminate dead, damaged, diseased, or crossing branches, as well as suckers (shoots from the base) and water sprouts (vigorous vertical shoots). The tree should be somewhat open when complete and shapely.
