Ribes rubrum Details

Ribes rubrum, commonly known as Red Currant, is a deciduous shrub grown for its flavoursome berries. Small, white flowers in spring give rise to clusters of small and glossy, red, berries in summer. These are borne along the upright stems amidst the dark green foliage. The foliage eventually turns yellow before falling in winter. It typically grows to 1.5 m tall and the same wide and can be trimmed as necessary. The older stems should be removed each winter so it does not become too woody and this will assist with achieving better yields. Best results with this plant are achieved when it is grown on a well-drained, sheltered site in full sun. It is frost hardy and will tolerate short periods of dry. Ribes rubrum is commonly grown for fruit production, added to a mixed planting, grown as an informal hedge, or included in cottage gardens.
