Babianas are a bulbous plant that produces masses of showy flowers above the grass-like foliage. The flowers are colourful shades of blue and purple and borne on 20 cm long stems through late spring and early summer. The dark green leaves serve as a pleasant backdrop to the flowers. This herbaceous perennial typically grows to 30 cm tall and 20 cm wide, and will usually die back during winter to regrow again in spring. In drought conditions it will also die back. This variety grows best when positioned in full sun on a well-drained site. It will tolerate extended dry periods, cool climates, and frost but not heavy and wet soils. Babianas are commonly included in cottage gardens, added to mixed and border plantings, planted along a sunny bank, or maintained in a container. A mass planting is a must with this plant and bulbs should be spaced 20 cm apart.
