The leaves radiate outwards, have a gentle arch, and some thorns. A long stem often emerges during summer from the centre of the plant to bear clusters of orange flowers. Ignoring the flower stem, it typically grows to 1.5 m tall and 2 m wide. It grows best when planted on a well-drained site in full sun, and is tolerant of extended dry periods, coastal environments, and moderate frost once established.
