The sturdy leaves are covered with sharp thorns. It can reach 3.5 m tall and 2 m wide in its natural environment. Best results with this cactus are achieved when it is grown in full sun on a well-drained site. It will tolerate extended dry periods, moderate frost, and coastal environments. The Prickly Paddle Cactus is commonly included in large gardens where it makes for an impressive specimen.
