Opuntia microdasys rufida, commonly known as the Red Bunny Ears Cactus, is grown for its great form and smaller stature. It produces pad like leaves that branch off each other. The fleshy leaves are lime green and often develop blue tones with age, and are covered with red-brown glochids. It can reach 1.5 m tall and 1 m wide in its natural environment, but generally only reaches 50 cm tall and 40 cm wide when maintained in a container. Best results with this cactus are achieved when it is grown in full sun on a well-drained, semi-sheltered site. It will tolerate extended dry periods, moderate frost, and coastal environments. Opuntia microdasys rufida is commonly included in rock gardens where it makes for an impressive specimen, or maintained in a container. It is well suited to being grown indoors in an office environment.
