Opuntia sublata, commonly known as Eve’s Needle Cactus, is a smaller cactus grown for its interesting form. It produces towers made up of fleshy stems covered with fine, needle-like leaves, and the stems will often twist in different directions. An orange flower will often adorn each stem during summer as it grows to about 60 cm tall and 20 cm wide. This variety prefers a full sun position with a well-drained soil and is tolerant of extended dry periods and should be protected from frost. Opuntia sublata is commonly grown as an indoor plant or added to rock and Mediterranean gardens. A mass planting in a border can also look very effective with this unusual plant.
