Bougainvillea Scarlet O'Hara

5 from 3 customers

Bougainvillea Scarlet O’Hara, commonly known as the Paper Flower, is a vigorous climber that produces magnificent, rich red flowers. In cool climates it flowers during summer only, but in warmer climates it may flower throughout the year and remain evergreen. It typically grows to 5 m tall and 4 m wide but is usually trimmed to control growth. Bougainvillea Scarlet O’Hara is perfect for training over an arch or gazebo or allowing to ramble along a fence. Where it doesn’t have a support structure it will grow as a groundcover and can be used for planting on a bank or the like.

Bougainvillea Scarlet O’Hara care

Bougainvillea Scarlet O’Hara care is simply about getting a few easy things right so the plant thrives. They prefer a sheltered spot in full sun but can tolerate partial shade. A well-drained, fertile soil is crucial for success as heavy and wet soils can cause root rot issues and the plants will simply not do well. Adding organic matter like compost into the soil during planting will help with soil fertility. They prefer a dry soil so be sure to only water when the top 25 cm of soil is dry and then give them a deep watering. Be sure to avoid overwatering, however, which is generally related to how frequently they are watered. Applying shrub fertiliser in spring will keep the plants well-fed for the year. Prune in winter to contain the growth and lightly trim as necessary during the other seasons. Applying mulch around the base of the plant helps retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds. They can get aphids from time to time and these are easily treated with an insecticide.

Can Bougainvillea Scarlet O’Hara be grown in a pot?

Bougainvillea Scarlet O’Hara is easily grown in a pot. Choose at least 30 cm wide and 40 cm deep for your plant that has plenty of drainage holes. Use good quality growing media to pot up the plant. It will need a stake or small trellis to climb and the plants should be trimmed as necessary to contain the growth. Water the plants only when the soil is dry on top and make sure it is positioned in bright light.
